The political and economic imperatives for a tight 2011 budget removed any prospect for any major announcements of benefit to universities. Instead the 2011 Budget maintained the Government's support for the reform program it outlined in 2009 across teaching and learning and research. It was a budget night where no news was likely to be good news.
Unis share electives to boost disciplines

A HUBS-AND-SPOKES model to sustain teaching in vulnerable disciplines is under way, with a pilot in advanced year physics electives being shared between Newcastle and James Cook universities.

The assertion that a student demand-driven system must be joined to uncapped student contributions to create an open market is gaining undue acceptance. It is not a logically necessary proposition but an argument that is a means to higher revenue and for some a point of ideology.
Rather than an unsustainable half way step to a market, the
planned mix of uncapped places and capped charges is a viable
system to promote competition based on quality as the best way for
students to gain a suitable higher education.

PRODUCTIVITY indicators need to measure actual outcomes when it comes to allocating funding.
THERE is much ado across the sector as universities consider the implications of the performance funding methodology and indicators. We are all quick to point out the limitations of the indicators, the weakness in the methodologies and the flaws in each of the instruments, current and proposed.
